Since the publications of O. Beccari (1908) and of Gagnepain & Conrard, in the “Flore Générale de l'Indochine” (1947), which is to date the only comprehensive floristic treatment of the palm family for Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, the most important work for the region has been the recent work by A. Henderson (NYBG). In Vietnam alone the number of species has been doubled and many changes have occurred at the generic level, such as Lanonia being described as a new genus after a long confusion with Licuala. In southern Laos, the quite unique and endemic Calamus harmandii Pierre ex. Becc. was rediscovered by Tom Evans in 1999 but mystery still remains around species such as Areca laosensis Becc. The poster will present the current state of knowledge of the family in the region and will announce a future publication on the subject. Many areas, especially in Cambodia and Laos, remain under-collected and more fieldwork will be needed to complete such a publication.
