A taxonomic study of Digitaria Haller (crabgrass, Gramineae) in mainland SE Asia leads to the recognition of 24 species in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Its morphological features, especially its inflorescences and spikelets, are very useful for species identification and were scored using stereomicroscopy. The results allow the taxonomic status of all species to be clarified. Digitaria effusa Veldcamp from Vietnam is reduced to synonymy under D. abyssinica (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf which is the first report for SE Asia. Similarly, D. siamensis Henrard from Thailand has no significant difference from D. sparsifructus Ohwi and should be placed under the latter. In addition, D. isanensis Boonsuk , Chantar. & Hodk. was recorded in Cambodia for the first time and D. ciliaris (Retz.) Koeler, D. setifolia Stapf, D. setigera Roth and D. ternata Stapf were recorded in Laos for the first time. Nevertheless, more intensive fieldwork and revision should be carried on the crabgrasses of the area.
