Indo-china is a hot-spot for both magnolias and conifers. The recent Red List of Magnoliaceae, produced by the Global Tree Campaign in 2007, identified 44 Chinese species as threatened or data deficient and 42 taxa were not evaluated due to insufficient data being available. The known distribution of many species stops at the Vietnamese border, but it is possible that survey work may reveal that they also occur in Vietnam. Magnolia grandis is a highly threatened species thought to be confined to a small area of southern China until its discovery in Ha Giang Province, northern Vietnam in 2010.

In 2013, FFI Vietnam and the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) in Vietnam agreed to implement the project “Conservation of threatened trees in priority reserves in Northern Viet Nam” supported by the Global Trees Campaign. Through the project, six species and one variety have been recorded for Vietnam for the first time. In Vietnam, based on the estimated area of occupancy, two species, Magnolia hongheensis and Magnolia sinica, are listed as Critically Endangered (CR), four species, Magnolia grandis, Magnolia hookeri var. longirostrata, Magnolia yunnanensis and Michelia coriacea, as Endangered (EN), and one species, Woonyoungia septentrionalis, as Vulnerable (VU).

This report includes summary data on the nomenclature, vernacular names, type specimens, morphological characters, phenology, uses, habitats, distributions, conservation status, specimens examined and illustrations for the six species and one variety of Magnolia recorded as new records for the flora of Vietnam.
